Bakkeveen is a typical commuter village and many residents are oriented to work in places like Drachten, Leeuwarden, Heerenveen and (to a lesser extent) Groningen and Assen.

The village was first mentioned as the place where in 1231 the Frisians and Drenthe fought a battle. During the Eighty Years' War, the village was destroyed by the Spaniards. The current Bakkeveen arose during the peat extraction in 1660.
