This stamp was one of a set of five issued in booklet format in 1995. Each design features a different lighthouse on each of the five Great Lakes. Representing Lake Erie is Marblehead lighthouse in Ohio. Though there have been several structural improvements made to the tower, this lighthouse has remained remarkably unchanged over the years. There have been the usual lighthouse upgrades, for instance, the beacon started as thirteen whale oil lamps with metal reflectors. These gave way to lard oil lamps, which were eventually replaced with kerosene lamps and Fresnel lenses. Finally, electric lights were installed in 1923 and LED lights in 2012.

Today the lighthouse is fully automated and sits in a small park maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Besides the tower, the park consists of picnic tables, fishing areas and the renovated keeper’s residence that contains a small museum. Clearly visible from this point are several Lake Erie islands as well as the Cedar Point Amusement Park across the bay entrance in Sandusky.
