A grade 2 listed cabmen’s shelter. The shelter is constructed of timber with iron balustrade and guttering. The roof is of beechwood shingle.
The shelter was constructed in 1911, and paid for by Sarah Carter, a daughter of a former mayor of Ripon, for use by the drivers of horse drawn cabs. The shelter was designed by the Norwich firm of Boulton & Paul, the provider of the huts for Scott’s Antarctic expedition. The shelter was restored by the Royal Engineers in 1980, who placed the shelter on wheels to facilitate restoration. Further restoration was necessary in 1990 after a vehicle accident caused damage.
The plaque reads :-
This rare shelter by Boulton & Paul of Norwich was provided in 1911 through a legacy of £200 by Sarah Carter, a former Mayor's daughter, for use by cabmen waiting for fares in the Market Place. By 1982, when acquired by Cllr R Simpson and passed on to this Society, it was badly decayed and has twice since been extensively restored. In 1999 this Society gave it back to Ripon City Council.
