The Portland Art Museum has hired one-time Seattleite Sara Krajewski as its new curator of modern and contemporary art, museum leaders announced this week. She replaces longtime curator Bruce Guenther, who retired in October 2014 after 14 years at the museum.

Krajewski comes to Portland after serving for three years as the director of the INOVA (Institute of Visual Arts) galleries at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before that, she spent nearly eight years in Seattle as curator at the University of Washington's Henry Art Gallery.

Portland Art Museum director Brian Ferriso first met Krajewski almost 20 years ago, when they both worked in Wisconsin -- he in Milwaukee and she in Madison.

"I was immediately impressed with her knowledge and passion for modern and contemporary art then, and my high regard for her talents has increased as I have followed her career since," Ferriso said in the announcement of Krajewski's hiring.

"I am thrilled that she will be joining our distinguished team of curators," he added. "I am confident she will have a significant impact on our institution and community."

Krajewski's previous experience includes curatorial positions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Harvard University Art Museum. She holds an undergraduate degree in art history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a master's degree in art history from Williams College.

At the INOVA, she expanded the gallery's focus on interdisciplinary art forms, film and video installation, and performance art.

Krajewski assumes her role in Portland on Aug. 31. She said that she's looking forward to finding new ways to connect people with the museum's contemporary art collections and exhibitions.

"Portland is a dynamic and creative community that is poised for growth," she said in a statement. "This is an exciting time to move here."

Krajewski's hiring was among of a handful of staff changes the museum announced. Northwest art curator Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson plans to retire next year; curator Dawson Carr will oversee European painting and sculpture up to 1900, Mary Weaver Chapin is now curator of prints and drawing; Donald Urquhart has been promoted to director of collections and exhibitions; and Samantha Springer has been hired as conservator. Ferriso remains chief curator, a role previously held by Guenther.
