In this particular case the sign shows a farmer cradling a young lamb in his arms.

According to a Garstang historical web page the pub changed its name in 1868 from The Shovel and Broom and at that point it was connected to a large mill.

The site also states that the farmers arms has changed to become an Italian restaurant, but it has now reverted to being a pub. link
