The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "olympiad".

The sculpture is made from painted metal by American sculptor George Sugarman. He was born in New York where he studies in art school. After travelling to Italy and Spain to study architecture and Baroque sculpture he returned to New York in 1955 where he associated with the "New Sculpture Group", trying to replace the human figure by another form of representation.

Although his works drew attention for his use of colour, this particular sculpture is only in black and white.

Sadly part of the sculpture has been defaced by graffiti, but fortunately only a small amount.

The dimensions of the work are 173 * 400 * 173 cm. link
