The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "olympiad".

The sculpture is carved from Carrara marble by Argentinian sculptor Julio le Parc. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires. In 1958, he obtained a research grant and settled in Paris, where he studied with Vassarely and other artists. Ceasing production of art in traditional media and is dedicated to investigating light, movement and color, with the production of kinetic objects.

Much of his work relies on light effects, where the sculpture varies when viewed from various angles.
