"The Hessett war memorial only covers World War 1. It is to be found within the grounds of St Ethelbert's Church, Hessett and takes the form of a Celtic cross with a stone wreath decoration, all standing on a rectangular base. The year of death and the names of the men that fell are listed on the shaft of the cross, there are 14 names listed. The memorial was unveiled by Brigadier-general A L Schreiber 3 October 1920; the builder's were Hanchets. Details appeared in the Bury Free Press 9 October 1920. Within the church is a further Roll of Honour listing the men who served in World War 1 from Hessett, those who died are anotated; the name of John Whiting appears on the memorial but not on the Roll of Honour."
