The program had a 2 page overview of the history of the Merchant Marine (credited to Wikipedia). During the American Revolution they were privateers in the Atlantic. During WW II, this necessary service, the supply of regular troops, too casualties at the rate of one man in 26.
Of 243,000 sailors, 9,520 were lost, along with 1,500 ships. They suffered more casualties than any other branch of the military.
During the Korean War, the ships were chartered. They provided 95 percent of supplies during the Vietnam War. By 2003, they were called the Ready Reserve Force and sealifted tons of cargo and fuel to support forces in Iraq. That unit, RRF,supported humanitarian efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in Sept. 2005. They face threats from nature, war, and piracy.
