... je mohutný strom s košatou korunou, vysoký až 25 m. Má strídave rapíkaté listy, svrchu tmave zbarvené a rídce bíle chlupaté, vespod svetleji zbarvené a zretelne bílé chlupaté, se srdcite okrouhlou, na okraji zubatou až pilovitou cepelí. Z úžlabí listu vyrustají vidlanovitá kvetenství pravidelných kvetu, jejichž až 8 cm dlouhá stopka je srostlá se spodní tretinou až polovinou podpurného listenu žlutozelené barvy.
Je puvodní témer v celé Evrope a tvorí rozsáhlé lesy na Krymu a Kavkaze. Je hojná na vlhcích sutovitých pudách a v listnatých lesích od nížin po podhurí. V souvislých porostech se casto vyskytuje v krovité forme.
Lípa je od pradávna jedním z nejoblíbenejších stromu po celé Evrope a hojne se s ní setkáváme již ve starých bájích, poverách, poezii a výtvarném umení. U nás se stala zásluhou Kollárovy Slávy dcery a národního obrození národním stromem.
Název rodu Tilia pochází z reckého ptilon (= krídlo), podle blanitých krídlatých listenu kvetenství.
