More from their website at (visit link) : "Some featured programs include environmental education for high schools; workshops for teachers and other adults; tours of Cook County’s only canyon (25 ft high walls of dolomite limestone from an ancient coral reef, estimated to be 100,000 years old), and general public walks and programs. Sagawau provides habitat for over 100 species of migrant and resident birds, and is home for the banding program of the Chicagoland Bird Observatory – visitors welcome in season.

In winter Sagawau becomes a premier Nordic ski location, with rentals, lessons, and groomed trails.

Sagawau Canyon Nature Preserve (the name for the five acres of tallgrass prairie, one of the earliest prairie restorations in the area, and the grounds the Learning Center is located on) is a unique area with unusual plants and rock formations. Guided walks are scheduled spring through fall. Individual access is restricted to protect this unique and fragile site."

I came out for one of their periodic Photo Meetups. Definitely need to revisit as the seasons change. I was lucky to get the chance to walk through the canyon in solitude as well. Found a geocache at the north end of the Nature Preserve, a bit off the trail.

Located: Rt 171 N to Rt 83, 100 yards E of Archer, 4 mi W of Swallow Cliff, in Palos Preserves.
