The two lions, that stand about 1.5 metres (five feet) tall are carved from stone and are shown sitting on their haunches with their front paws supporting a stone shield. The leion on the left is supporting a shield that has the Kent crest and the one on the right the Maidstone crest. Some light weathering has taken place but there is no mistaking that these are lions. The gate piers and lions were created in the 19th century.
