Tejano South Texas: A Mexican American Cultural Province by Daniel D. Arreola

Plaza created in 1876 when the town was platted. It is named in honor of Father J. Pedro Bard who served San Diego from 1877-1920.

When created the plaza was the central focus of the community. It remains so today. On the east end of the plaza is St. Francis de Pabla Church. On the west end of the plaza is the City Hall. Abandoned commercial building are on the other sides.

The plaza is the stage for the ritual promenade or paseo, an activity inherited from Mexico. Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day (Sept 16) celebrations are also held here.

In 1886 there was a fund raiser to built the gazebo which they call a kiosco. The gazebo is encircled by a concrete walkway that intercepts diagonal paths from the four corners of the block and receives two additional perpendicular walkways from the North and South.
