In Keene, is the Woodland Cemetery and Woodland Cemetery Northeast Division, which has been said to be the most haunted place in Keene.

The cemetery is in two parts, joined together by a narrow road. The main part of the cemetery, the western part, is the oldest part and has many interesting monuments in various conditions, adding to the atmosphere. The Northeast part is newer and more open, and you would think would not make you feel that is haunted.

Apparently, though, this is not the case. One center of interest is the Sumner Knight and Family Chapel, near the north end of the Northeast Division. This is a stone chapel, a typical design seen in cemeteries. Sites have stated that there is a malevolent haunt here. One story goes that if you curse around the chapel you will get a strong soapy smell afterward. There is another spirit that may make you feel watched and hover over or around you. Another claim is that a little girl has been seen hopping around gravestones and trees watching you.

One source had a longer account where five teenagers decided to test the myths by visiting the cemetery. They got a little more than they bargained for. As teenagers would, they cursed a storm around the chapel - three of them claimed to suddenly taste soap. Two, who were a couple, did not, but when they kissed, they had trouble pulling apart.

Another source were two people walking around in the twilight. They saw two black figures while they were in the car. When they flicked the headlight beam on and off, one remained.

On our visit, we didn't see anything, nor really heard anything. We were there in the late morning on a cloudy, windless day. We came by people occasionally - none was a little girl. However, we were stalked by a calico cat who didn't seem to care about ghosts - or people for that matter.
