The sign reads:

"Lahaina Store

Poineer Mill Company, established in 1860, once owned a large parcel of Front Street, including this building. Employees of the mill occupied apartments in the second story, and the ground floor opened for business in 1916 as "The Lahaina Store."

One of the first buildings in town to have an elevator, it was touted as the finest store building on Maui. It was a company store in which the mill workers could get groceries and dry goods. Mill employees were allowed to purchase goods on credit using their company isentification called "bungo numbers." Purchase totals were deducted from the employees' paychecks.

The waterproof basement housed a butcher shop. Pioneer Mill raised and slaughtered its own cattle for the Baldwin Packers cannery in town. The company store closed on June 7, 1952. After numerous reincarnations, including a theme restaurant and boutique shops, this building underwent renovations and was restored in 2003, and is once again referres to as "The Lahaina Store" building."
