The sign reads:

"East - West Trade

After the death of Kamehameha I in 1819, Lahaina began to receive frequent visits from explorer ships, and soon saw the arrival of the first Christian missionaries. From the early 1820's to around 1860, Lahaina was the anchorage point for whaling ships and trading. The calm roadstead of this port allowed vessels to arrive or depart with any winds that blew.

Visiting ships would load up on fresh water and a myriad of food supplies found on Maui, such as hogs, goats, fowl and beef, fruits, vegetables, even Irish potatoes, which the sailors much preferred over yams. Lahaina also provided R&R time for the whalers, so naturally grog shops and brothels began to spring up, much to the dismay of resident missionaries and government officials.

Also in the 19th century, commercial shipping began in Lahaina, as West Maui was a good source for sandal-wood. This trade established ties with nations such as Russia and China. The town eventually became a recruiting ground for Hawaiian seaman, many of whom signed up as whalers on the hundreds of ships coming in, creating an exodus of native Hawaiians anxious to see the world."
