A few paces from Victoria Station are Upper and Lower Grosvenor Gardens. The Gardens which date back to 1864 were designed to compliment Thomas Cundy’s French Renaissance style houses which overlook the two patches of green. Upper Grosvenor Gardens were only opened to the public in 1980, prior to that they were for the use of nearby residents only. The highlight of the garden is the magnificent life-sized sculpture of a Lioness chasing a Lesser Kudu by Jonathan Kenworthy. A stunning bronze sculpture is life-sized and looks absolutely magnificent. Kenworth has magically caught the moment – a wild beast hunting for its lunch, whilst another desperately tries to stay alive – and turned it into bronze! During the 1990s, Kenworthy worked on a thirty foot sculpture of the Lioness and a Lesser Kudu a commission for the Duke of Westminster. Kenworthy carved the sculptures out of blocks of polystyrene, the models were cast by the Meridan Bronze Foundry in London in 1998. One casting sits on a hundred foot long oval pond at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, the second is in Upper Grosvenor Gardens in London.
