Ada, the county seat for Pontotoc County, is on the north edge of the 13-state territory of the Chickasaw Nation. The Tribal Headquarters and office of the Governor of the tribe is located here in Ada.
In front of the headquarters stands this impressive sculpture, located in a raised garden with a stone wall. The bronze sculpture stands seven feet tall and depicts a Native American warrior dressed in a loin cloth, with a necklace made of animal teeth. He has a shield in his left hand, and two spears in his right.
The sculptor is Enoch Kelly Haney, a Seminole/Creek who has been awarded the honor of Master Artist of the Five Civilized Tribes. After four decades as a painter, he now creates exquisite Native American pieces. He is the artist who created the 22 foot high sculpture "The Guardian" which stands atop of the dome of the Oklahoma State Capitol. He has also been active in politics through the years, serving as an Oklahoma State Representative from 1980-1986, and in the Oklahoma Senate from 1986-2002.
