The sundial is set to indicate the time from 6am to 4pm with major graduations for the hours, minor graduations for the half hour and smaller marks for each five minutes. The hours are carved into the stone surround as Roman Numerals. Across the top of the sundial is a quotation from Horace's Odes that reads "Pulvis et umbra sumus" that translates to "we are but dust and shadows" which is very apt for a sundial in a churchyard.
