The first mention of the village, as a property of the Rožmberks, is from 1399, but the village probably originates from the 13th century. The iron mines were founded in the surroundings and one of the biggest ironworks in South Bohemia was built in the town.

The dominant feature of the town is the Baroque Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, which towers on the hill above the pond. The church was built on the layout of the Greek cross in 1745 and it is a copy of the pilgrimage church in Mariazell (Austria). Three aisles and the sacristy were added in 1805. The furnishings are in the Baroque style. The Stations of the Cross lead from the chateau to the church.

Prestože první zmínky o obci pocházejí až z roku 1399, kdy byla soucástí rožmberského trebonského panství, vznikla pravdepodobne již ve 13. století. V 15. století byla v okolí zahájena težba železné rudy. Koncem 18. století zde byla založena jedna z nejvetších železáren v jižních Cechách. Vyrábela mimo jiné také kolejnice pro stavbu konesprežní železnice vedoucí z Ceských Budejovic do severorakouského Lince. Po zrušení železáren pocátkem 20. století se v Chlumu u Trebone zacal rozvíjet prumysl sklárský. Dnes tak patrí mesto mezi nekolik málo jihoceských obcí s rozvinutou sklárskou tradicí.

Významnou architektonickou památkou je barokní kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie tycící se na návrší nad mestem. Puvodne barokní stavba z roku 1745 byla postavena na pudorysu reckého kríže podle vzoru poutního kostela v rakouském Mariazell. V roce 1805 bylo pristaveno chrámové trojlodí a sakristie. Vybavení kostela je vetšinou barokní. Krížová cesta spojuje kostel se zámkem.
