The originally Gothic castle towers on the rock spit above the valley of the Stropnice river on the western outskirts of the town Nové Hrady.

It was founded at the end of the 13th century by the Vítkovec family. It is first mentioned at the same time as the settlement around it in 1279 - it protected trade route to Austria. It was captured twice in the 15th century - for the first time in 1425 by the Hussites (it was burnt down) and in 1467 by the soldiers of the Czech higher nobility ("Panská Jednota"). Huge reconstruction started at the end of the 15th century, but in 1573 the castle burnt down. The reconstruction at the end of the 16th century was not so important and the castle was completely renewed at the beginning of the 17th century. General Buquoy with his soldiers captured the castle in 1620 for the last time and the castle became his property. The Buquoys used the castle for the forest office and for accommodation.

Puvodne gotický hrad se tycí na skalnatém výbežku nad údolím rícky Stropnice na západním okraji stejnojmenného mesta.

Byl založen Vítkovci koncem 13. století na míste, kde pravdepodobne již dríve bývalo starší hradište. Prvne je pripomínán spolecne s podhradím roku 1279 jako strážní hrad na Vitorazské obchodní stezce. Po Vítkovcích vlastnili hrad s mestem pánové z Landštejna a dalšími majiteli se stali Rožmberkové. V roce 1425 hrad dobyli a vypálili husité a v roce 1467 znovu vojska panské jednoty. Pri rozsáhlé prestavbe v první polovine 16. století získal hrad soucasnou dispozici. V roce 1573 byl težce poškozen požárem. Koncem 16. století, již v majetku Švamberku, na nem probehly menší opravy, dukladnejší rekonstrukce se dockal na pocátku století sedmnáctého. V roce 1620 byl hrad dobyt generálem Buquoyem. Poté byl využíván k ubytování úredníku lesní správy a sídlil v nem buquoyovský lesní úrad.

Hrad má protáhlý polygonální pudorys. Je chránen mohutným zdeným príkopem a asi na trech ctvrtinách obvodu obklopen hradbami, za kterými je parkán s drobnými, dovnitr otevrenými polokruhovými baštami. Vstup do hradu umožnují dve hranolové vežové brány, které jsou prístupné po drevených mostech.
