SAN DIEGO — As Balboa Park visitors streamed past Tuesday morning, Pedro Bautista and Victor Quiroz quietly buried a metal time capsule in the Old Globe Theatre’s Craig Noel Garden.

In it were photos, brochures, a letter from President Barack Obama and a bobblehead of Hall of Champions founder Bob Breitbard — all memories of this year’s centennial celebration of the park’s Panama-California Exposition.

“Today we look ahead 100 years to envision a new generation of San Diegans unveil our cherished artifacts and get a glimpse of our unwavering passion for Balboa Park in 2015,” said Old Globe Managing Director Michael Murphy.

Murphy spoke at a Monday evening reception where 11 park institutions and others ceremoniously deposited their contributions into the 24-inch-long, stainless-steel box — to be opened in 2115. The location was registered with the International Time Capsule Society, and copies of the items will be sent to the San Diego History Center in case the box is lost or stolen.

The Patrons of the Prado support group organized the time capsule effort as it announced that it had raised a record $652,318 at its annual July gala. The 11 institutions each received checks for $58,000, including $10,000 to underwrite school group bus costs. The patrons group has raised $3 million since its founding in 1997.

Former San Diego City Manager Jack McGrory, who chaired the gala, recalled that the park was in disrepair in the 1980s before the city set aside funds for repairs and building reconstructions.

“Balboa Park is such an important part of the history and heart and soul of this city that we need to learn from that experience and make sure this park has a continual reinvestment plan to keep it the cultural heart and soul of the region of San Diego,” McGrory said."
