Erie Railway Bridge - Elmira, NY

The bridge says Erie, but Erie merged with Lackawanna. Now the Norfolk Southern goes through Elmira. This bridge crosses the Chemung river and then becomes part of the elevated rail in Elmira. It can be seen from the park that runs along the river.

"When President Millard Fillmore and Secretary of State Daniel Webster visited Elmira in 1851 to celebrate the completion of the Erie line, the railroad tracks were west of the "little village."
Elmira, at that time, was centered around Lake and Baldwin streets, although people had begun relocating westward."
"Construction of the 1,700-foot Erie viaduct from the northern side of Second Street to the northerly abutment of the river bridge began on Dec. 1, 1933 "through the coldest winter the community has experienced in many years … ground temperatures far below zero.""
