The Downtown Tempe Utility Boxes projects have transformed traffic control boxes from dust covered cabinets to 5-sided canvases. Local artists were commissioned to paint a two-dimensional depiction of the uniqueness of Arizona and Tempe, bringing public art to the street corners of Downtown Tempe.

Artist Oliverio Balcells set out to tell the story of ancient Tempe by honoring the Hohokam and Toltec people. When looking at this piece be sure to take special notice of the Hohokam-style petroglyphs and classic Toltec symbols for corn, beans, and squash. This piece melds ancient Tempe and modern to highlight the unique character of the city.
