Boyd believes that Tempe is in the act of transitioning on several different levels simultaneously, and wanted to capture the transformation occurring in and around the city. He envisions Tempe progressing into a more artistic, liberal, socially engaged community in the near future. Although random and particular architectural structures provide the content for the layout of the utility box, Boyd’s use of primarily blue throughout the painting is meant to capture the energy and vibe of a lively city during the night.
