This large granite boulder located in the Maple City Veteran's Memorial Park on East Michigan Avenue, indicates permanent geographic coordinates of the village of Paw Paw, Michigan
A nearby bronze plaque reads as follow:
22 NOVEMBER 1976 AD
THIS BLOCK OF STONE SET IN YEAR OF SEPTEMBER
1875, BY TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS OF THE U.S. LAKE
SURVEY MARKS THE PRECISE POSITION OF PAW PAW ON THE
MAP OF THE WORLD. IT BEING 42°, 13 MINUTES, ONE AND
66-100 OF THE SECOND NORTH LATITUDE BY 85°, 53 MINUTES
THREE AND 31-100 OF A SECOND WEST LONGITUDE.
THE OBSERVING INSTRUMENT WAS A LARGE ZENITH TRANSIT
MOUNTED ON TOP OF THIS SOLID STONE BLOCK.
THIS PLAQUE PLACED IN DECEMBER 1976 BY THE PAW PAW
BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION.
Paw Paw is a village in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,534 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Van Buren County.
The village is located at the confluence of the east and south branches of the Paw Paw River in the northeast portion of Paw Paw Township. Paw Paw was incorporated in 1837 and is located in the southwestern portion of Michigan, on Interstate 94 (I-94) approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of Kalamazoo.
