Im Stadtgebiet von Leipzig gibt es 30 restaurierte und mehr als 30 nicht restaurierte Handschwengelpumpen aus dem späten 19. bis frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Die Pumpen stehen unter Denkmalschutz. Auffallend ist, dass die Handschwengelpumpen in Leipzig zumeist in ihrer Ausgestaltung nicht einzigartig sind, sondern mehrfach im Stadtgebiet vorkommen. Von ursprünglich elf Typen, sind heute noch acht auffindbar. Einige dieser Pumpen-Typen weisen eine bemerkenswerte kunstvolle Gestaltung auf, da sie aus einem künstlerischen Wettbewerb entstanden sind.
Zum Typ 'Großer Löwe':
Die Schöpfer des Typs 'Großer Löwe' (entstanden aus einem Wettbewerb des Jahres 1910) sind der Architekt Heinrich Quint und der Bildhauer Arthur Kuntzsch.
"Über einem ausladenden Sockel erhebt sich ein relativ wuchtiger Pumpenkörper mit quadratischem Querschnitt. Die Seitenteile tragen nur eine schlichte Verzierung, die am Abschluss unterhalb des aufsitzenden Sockels Elemente des Jugendstils aufweist. Der auf dem Sockel sitzende Löwe war im Original aus Zinkblech und wird bei Restaurierungen als Galvanoplastik hergestellt, die mit Gips ausgegossen wird." Während meines Besuches der Pumpe, war diese nicht funktionstüchtig.

About 'Handschwengelpumpen' in Leipzig:
In the city of Leipzig there are 30 restored and more than 30 not restored Handschwengelpumpen from the late 19th to early 20th century. The pumps are national monuments. In the city are most more than one from the same type. Of the original eleven types are still eight discoverable. Some of these pump types have a remarkable artistic design, because they emerged from an artistic competition.
About the type 'Big Lion':
The creator of the type 'Big Lion' (originated from a competition of the year 1910) are the architect Heinrich Quint and the sculptor Arthur Kuntzsch.
The pump is quite simply decorated. Only below the socle are elements of Art Nouveau. The lion on the top of the socle was originally made of zinc metal. During the restoration the lion is prepared as electroforming, wich is filled with plaster.
During my visit, the pump was not working.
