Mather served as a Federal air base from 1918 until 1993.
Some of the land included early rock tailings from the gold rush era.
It is east of Sacramento and is 5,845 acres.

It was listed in July 1987 for contamination of aquifers.
Tricholoroethylene (TCP) was determined to be hazardous.
Levels of contamination are given as percentages. Here, 28.9%.
Not all acreage is affected. Some clean up has been effected before making the area into a business park.
The flight line is in use as a freight depot for UPS and FedEx, and helicopter base for local law enforcement.
Environmental investigations began at Mather AFB in 1982 and continued for several years. A total of 89 areas with significant contamination were identified. Following immediate actions to protect human health and the environment, the site’s long-term cleanup is ongoing.
