Mit dem Bau des Hochwasserschutzdeiches 1928-1931 erfuhr die Rheinansicht von Neuwied eine gründliche Veränderung. Der Deich schützt den Stadtkern und seine Umgebung vor Überflutung. 600 Meter ist sie lang, die in hellen und dunklen Streifen gequaderte Deichmauer von der Schloß- bis zur Friedrichstraße mit ihren zwei großen Tordurchlässen und dem schlanken Pegelturm, dem sich eine breite Bootstreppe anschließt. Während der Pegelturm selbst eine reine Schmuckarchitektur darstellt und als werbendes Wahrzeichen von Neuwied gilt, befindet sich unter ihm, unsichtbar im Mauerwerk verborgen, eine Pegelanlage für den Deich, jedoch nicht für die Schifffahrt.
With the construction of the flood protection dyke 1928-1931 the Rhein view of Neuwied underwent a makeover .
