Nicolas Baudin set sail from Le Havre , France in 1800 with two ships , the Geographe and the Naturaliste, complete with astronomers, botanists,zoologists and other scientists to explore the coast of Western Australia. The two ships visited visited Cockburn Sound and surveyed the Swan River in June 1801,naming Heirisson Island , to which his bust is looking
Baudin charted the West Australian coast naming hundreds of place names of which over 200 are still in use, the expedition collected over 200,000 flora and fauna spicemins of which more than 2500 were new to science
He died of tuberculosis in Mauritius on the return voyage in 1803
Baudins Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus baudinii)or Long-billed Black Cockatoo is named in his honour

He is wearing early 19th century shirt and coat and is gazing across the Swan River towards Heirisson Island
