EN: Martin Birmann was born in 1828 as Martin Grieder in Rünenberg in humble circumstances. At school his talent was recognized and he was promoted by School Superintendent Johann Kettiger and the manufacturer's daughter Juliana Birmann-Vischer, who in 1853 also adopted him, and he changed his name to Birmann.

Birmann studied theology and became pastor in 1852. He alway strongly campaigned against poverty, and was the founder and President of several charity organizations. He was also a co-founder of Basellandschaftliche newspaper, and president of the Mortgage Bank of Basel-Country and Waldenburg railway line.

From 1854 he was a member of the parliament of the Canton Basel-Landschaft and member of the Council of States from 1869, president of the Council of States in 1884.

He died in 1890 in Liestal and was buried in Kilchberg.

The grave of Martin Birmann and his wife is on the outer wall of the church, at the northeast corner. The tombstone is made of sandstone with gothic ornaments and a black marble plaque.

In der Schule wurde sein Talent erkannt und er wurde von Schulinspektor Johannes Kettiger und der Fabrikantentochter Juliana Birmann-Vischer gefördert, welche ihn 1853 auch adoptierte und er ihren Namen annahm.

Birmann studierte Theologie und wurde 1852 Pfarrer. Er setzte sich stark für die Armen ein und war Gründer und Präsident mehrer gemeinnütziger Organisationen. Er war auch ein Mitbegründer der Basellandschaftlichen Zeitung, und Präsident der Hypothekenbank Basel-Landschaft und der Waldenburgerbahn.

Ab 1854 war er Mitglied des Landrats und ab 1869 Ständerat, den er 1884 präsidierte.

Er starb 1890 in Liestal und wurde in Kilchberg beigesetzt.

Das Grab von Martin Birmann und seiner Frau befindet sich an der Aussenwand der Kirche an der nordöstlichen Ecke. Der Grabstein ist aus Sandstein mit gotischen Ornamenten und einer schwarzen Marmortafel.
