Plaque text:
A NINETEENTH CENTURY FISHING VILLAGE
In one of the great areas of marine navigation, the Confederate gunboat Tallahasse, in for supplies during the American Civil War and trapped by enemy Northern cruisers waiting to pounce on her in the outer harbour, gave them the slip in a daring escape, on a flood tide by night, through the narrow Eastern Passage. It was said that her keel swished the eel-grass and furrowed the shoals on both sides.
Restored and augmented while still a working fishing village, Fisherman's Cove overlooks 136-acre Lawlor Island, and 975-acre McNabs Islannd containing Fort McNab National Historic Site, other former harbour fortifications, and the Hangman's Beach happily no longer so employed. The two islands together now comprise a unique urban-area provincial parkland and cultural resource. Look closely from here and you may see osprey, herons, terns, rare piping plovers, even white-tailed deer.
A seaplane base operated in Eastern Passage during World War I: Richard Byrd, later of Antarctic fame, was stationed there. Nearby are the Autoport, the Shearwater air station, oil refineries. Here, you are at the shore of the ocean; just beyond is the great sea.
