There's a petrified tree trunk, located infront of the State Institute for Nature and Geologyin in Weimar, Thüringen, Germany.

The rock type is a petrified Conifere tree trunk which is about 300 million years old. Petrified wood was created by the fact that silica dissolved in water in the voids of the wood penetrated the organic compounds and replaced with the time converted to quartz. This process is the interruption of oxygen supply and protection against microorganisms is necessary. This was the case when wood in rivers or lakes to store and quickly was covered by sediments.
