Tartar Cemetery is an old, long inactive cemetery of about forty-four burials, today occupying a small section of historic Elmwood Cemetery, Bowie, TX. It was moved here some years ago, and a memorial to those buried here stands at the entry.

The cemetery was moved to Elmwood Cemetery in 1981. It is separated from Elmwood by posts with plastic chain links -- the rear of the cemetery is wide open, probably for maintenance -- and at the front entry, there is a red granite monument that provides some background:

Tartar Cemetery
Founded 1889

To preserve the history of these pioneer people, the Tartar Cemetery was moved from it's [sic] original location in 1981 to make way for the Amon Carter Lake expansion project.

On the reverse is a listing of known burials:

Findagrave lists a few burials not listed on the monument, as well as omitting a few. Some of those buried here do have headstones, while at least one, Dora Dillon, is listed differently on her grave marker (as opposed to the "Dillion" on the memorial). The rest are buried in unmarked graves.
