Handsome sculpture incorporating five elements of importance to the Seneca Nation.

The five elements signify the connection of the Senecas with nature and Mother Earth.

From the marker:

The eagle is a revered bird in Native heritage. The gustowa or traditional headdress of the Seneca Nation features a single eagle feather pointed skyward.

The rear section of this piece is carved in the shape of a wolf, an important animal in the Native tradition. In fact, the Wolf Clan is one of the Eight Clans of the Seneca Nation of Indians.

The two braided legs of the sculpture represent antlers such as those born by such animals as the elk and deer. Another of the Seneca Nation's eight clans is the Deer Clan.

The back leg is carved to represent corn, which is an important staple of Native American tradition. Corn is one of the Three Sisters, a cornerstone to traditional Seneca food. Corn and corn husks play a significant role in Seneca traditions and customs.

Carved in the center of the eagle's wing is the Hiawatha Belt,
which signifies the Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. These five nations lived on the land we now call New York State.

The Seneca Nation occupied the westernmost land of this territory and were the Keepers of the Western Door.

To the east of the Seneca Territory were the Cayuga, the Onondaga, the Oneida and the Mohawk.

The Hiawatha Belt represents the agreement of these five Nations to live in harmony as indicated by the Tree of Peace in the center of the belt. The Hiawatha Belt served as a basis for the founding fathers as they drafted the Constitution of the United States."
