John Lasseter & a research crew from Pixar Animation Studios visited the Rock Café in 2001 and upon meeting owner, Dawn Welch began developing the character Sally Carrera for the movie Cars with multiple visits from 2001 to 2005. The café features many items left by the crew, photos & gifts received from her time working with Pixar and Disney.

The Rock Café in Stroud, Oklahoma - Has a Hampton Hotels Historic Marker fixed on the posts supporting the Rock Café sign, in front of the building.

The Text on the marker reads:
"ROCK CAFE, STROUD, OKLAHOMA /
National Register of Historic Places, established in 1939./
Built with rock unearthed during the paving of Route 66./
Recognized by Hampton Hotels, Save a Landmark program as a sight worth seeing."

"Originally built in 1936 and opened in 1939, the Rock Café reopened on May 29, 2009 after extensive repairs by historic preservationist David Burke due to damage from a 2008 fire.
Rock Café proprietor Dawn Welch, a long-time promoter of U.S. Route 66 in Oklahoma selected by The Oklahoman as Oklahoma's 2009 Woman of the Year, is the basis for animated character Sally Carrera in the Pixar film Cars." Text source: Built in 1936, the Rock Cafe in Stroud has been a popular Route 66 attraction for over 80 years. Destroyed by fire in 2008, the Rock Cafe was renovated and re-opened in 2009. Unique menu items such as the world-famous alligator burger, reuben sandwich and jagerschnitzel, a German dish, keep customers coming back. Open seven days a week, this is a great place to stop for a snack or meal while traveling along Route 66.

Over the years, the Rock Cafe has served many celebrities, including Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and former "Today" host Bryant Gumbel. Dawn Welch has owned the Rock Cafe on Route 66 since 1993, and she was the inspiration for the Sally Carrera character in the 2006 animated Pixar film "Cars."
