Also called Nahuku, Thurston Lava Tube, is located in the rain forest ecological zone. The abundant rainfall contributes to the lush growth of the forest canopy trees and the understorey vegetation.

The sign's title is "Sounds of the Rain Forest". Along Thurston lava tube, the songs of 'apapane and 'amakihi, two of Hawaii's native honeycreepers birds and perhaps an 'oma'o, a thrush (bird), can be heard nowhere in the world but on this island.
