The sign reads:

"About 500 acres of new land have been added to the island of Hawaii by lava flows that have poured into the ocean since 1983. Most of this lava was erupted from vents on the colcano's east zone and transported to the edge of the sea by a complex system of lava tubes.

Lava pours quietly into the sea from a tube system in the early morning of May 12, 1987. This slow, steady activity builds a lava delta, which has created new land along Hawaii's south coast.

Much of the lava that enters the sea is cooled so rapidly that it shatters into sand-size particles. Ocean currents transport these particles and deposit them along the coast, forming some of the world's most unusual beaches. Once the lava flow stops entering the ocean and the supply of sand is cut off, the beaches erode away, often in a few decades."
