Yosemite Valley was carved from thousands of years of glacial movement. Remnants can be found on the bedrock of the valley floor where you can observe scratch marks heading downhill where rocks trapped in the ice, scraped the bedrock as the glacier moved. When the glacier retreated, the valley was flooded and fine settlement from the mountains was brought with it. Eventually, the valley was a large lake that had little water movement. This allowed the finer material to settle to the bottom. Overtime, this water did flow and now is fed by the many waterfalls into the valley. This is the reason why this is a box snapped canyon and not a U-shapped canyon as seen with most glacial features.
