"CORNING (WENY) - The World War Memorial Library in Corning is finally undergoing restoration after more than 30 years of being vacant.
A partnership between local contractors, architects, and a historic preservation company, the old library will be turned into five upscale apartments. Construction on the five historically preserved apartments started last month and will be known as City Club Apartments.
The landmark building on Pine Street was built in 1897 and housed the Corning City Club, until a fire destroyed most of the interior in 1926. It was then the city's library until 1975, before being converted into office space for Steuben County. Three Rivers Development bought the property for $30,000 in 1999 before selling it to The Corning Historic Preservation LLC earlier this month.
Elise Johnson-Schmitt, the architect on the project, says she has a special connection to the building and remembers reading books in the library as a child. "It's a landmark and its history as the library and the city club it will be wonderful to see it returned to use and illustrative of how old buildings can be renewed as oppose to being demolished and being replaced with a parking lot," says Johnson-Schmitt.
HBD Realty Incorporated is the contractor on the 1.3 million dollar project and has started painting the outside of the building. The apartments range from one to two bedrooms, all with the original fireplaces, stairways and mantles. Johnson-Schmitt says its important to everyone working on the project to preserve as much of the original interior as possible.
The building is located only two blocks away from Market Street's Centerway Square and is expected to be ready for occupancy in mid 2015. To keep track of the building's progress you can like City Club Apartments on Facebook."

"It opened in 1898 as the Corning City Club, a social hub for the city’s high rollers until it was gutted by a fire in 1926. It was then renovated into the World War Memorial Library, which opened in 1930 and served as the city’s public library until 1975. It then served for a time as a Steuben County government building that housed the DMV and other offices...The new apartments are a mix of one, two- and three-bedroom units, with the three largest around 2,000 square feet. The rent will range from $1,300 to $2,750 plus utilities, and all the apartments will have air conditioning and their own washer and dryers. An elevator has been installed to reach the upper floors.
Two of the apartments are already taken, including one by the Vines."
