The park is sounded by NYU. The city wanted to do something to commemorate the 100th university of the first President of the United States George Washington in 1789 at the New York Stock Exchange a few miles south of here. The most dominating structure in the park is the Arch, but the park also has a large fountain and statues. The park construction started in 1891, two years past the university and although they missed celebration wouldn't come for another 100 years, the park added to the uniqueness of NYU.
Many of the building surround the park belong to New York University. The park attracts street performers alike. There are two geocaches in the park. One traditional and one Virtual.
