The restored Volcano House offers 33 historic guest rooms, a dining room, snack bar, lounge, and gift shop, along with cultural events and demonstrations. Volcano House also manages the camper cabins and campsites in Namakanipaio Campground.
Commanding Hawaii’s most unique lodging location, Volcano House overlooks Halema‘uma‘u Crater at the summit of Kilauea. Hike to the Napau Trail to view Pu‘u O‘o along the East Rift zone to witness spectacular eruptions of Kilauea, fed by the Hawaiian hotspot that formed the Hawaiian archipelago through 28 million years of volcanic activity.
As Hawaii’s oldest hotel, Volcano House has hosted visitors from around the world for generations, and its historic buildings represent a vital piece of Hawaii’s tourism history. Deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and hospitality, the Hotel offers an exceptional visitor experience and a legacy of aloha. In partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), Volcano House is proud to welcome visitors with a renewed commitment to Hawaiian hospitality.
A sign located at the Volcano House viewpoint reads:
"Shelter on the rim - By the 1820s, visitors began recording their camping experiences on the rim, long before any hotel was here to serve their basic needs of food and shelter. The first structures ranged from simple lean-tos of branches and sugar cane stalks to grass huts. If you were a guest at the first Volcano House (1846), you would have stayed in a small thatched hut with a fireplace and thin mats on the floor for sleeping. Lodging improved in the 1877 hotel, which included six separate guest rooms. The dinner menu consisted of roast wild pig, shoulder of wild goat, and potatoes. A specialty was néné (Hawaiian goose) cooked in a nearby steam vent and stuffed with ohelo berries. Today, part of this structure remains in use as the Volcano Art Center Gallery. Behind you is the 1941 Volcano House hotel. It continues to provide guests with the experience of staying overnight at the summit of an active volcano."
