The plaque says, "This building on your left, completed in 1986, is the heart of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, or HVO. The original observatory was established in 1912 at the site of today's Volcano House Hotel, visible across the caldera ahead. Once a part of the U.S. Weather Bureau, the HVO is now staffed by the U.S. Geological Survey under an agreement with the National Park Service.
Volcanologists, seismologists, geochemists, geophysicists, and supporting computer and electronics technicians work in concert here. They monitor seismic and volcanic activity, gather and analyze data, and conduct numerous experiments. Knowledge gained enables them to forecast eruptions more accurately, helping to protect lives and property.
In the field, HVO sciences measure lava flows and earth movements, take lava temperatures, and collect samples. They also maintain sensors which transmit data back to the observatory via radio telemetry. A cable running from here to a seismometer on the caldera floor enables scientists to take the pulse of the volcano."
