The town of Eugowra is said to be named after the Aboriginal word meaning "The place where the sand washes down the hill". European exploration in the area began in 1815 and was followed two years later by John Oxley passing through the area on an expedition. Pastoral settlement began in 1834 and the town was established in the 1860s.
Near Eugowra is where Australia's largest gold robbery took place when bushranger, Frank Gardiner and his gang, including Ben Hall ambushed the Forbes-Orange Cobb and Co coach in 1862 stealing 77 kilograms of gold and £3,700 in cash.
Eugowra is known for its granite which is used in Canberra's new Parliament House.
