The San Francisco Guide says:
PIGEON POINT was named for the clipper ship (Carrier Pigeon), wrecked here on May 6, 1853. A Portuguese whaling station once was here, and from the pier, lumber and dairy products were shipped. The high cliff is topped by the white conical tower of PIGEON POINT LIGHTHOUSE, 148 feet above water level, built in 1872. It’s 900,000-candlepower beam is visible for 18 miles.
Today Pigeon Point is a State Park, a California Historic Landmark, and a National Registered Historic Place.
It is available day use or overnight stays at the Pigeon Point Hostel.
