Robert McAlpin Williamson – perhaps better known these days as “Three-Legged Willie” – was a soldier, statesman, lawyer and newspaper publisher. His statue was scheduled to be installed Friday in front of the Williamson Museum, 716 S. Austin Ave. Georgetown.
“He’s well-known all over the state,” Museum Executive Director Mickie Ross said of Williamson, whose 1804-1859 life spanned Texas’ days as a republic (1836-46) and U.S. statehood before the Civil War. “He never lived here. He probably never came here. But the county is named for him, in honor of his service to the state.”
