Wood County Infirmary was built in 1869 to administer to the medical needs of county residents. Those requiring mental treatment were house above a pig sty. The director of the day was so appalled he ordered the construction on a new, separate facility, called the Lunatic House, to cater to those unfortunates. The ground floor consisted of cells, a washroom and attendant quarters. The second floor was a medical hospital. The facility opened in 1885.
