Taken from Wikipedia, "Hearst Castle is a National and California Historical Landmark mansion located on the Central Coast of California, United States. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan between 1919 and 1947 for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who died in 1951. The California Park Commission voted to approve its inclusion in the California State Park System, which was approved by the California State Legislature in 1954 with a proposed admission charge of $1 per person ($9 adjusted for inflation) and a 50¢ bus ride. However, ironing out the details with the Trustees of the Hearst Estate and the Hearst Corporation took several years. Agreement was finalized in 1957, and it opened in 1958. Since that time it has been maintained within the Hearst San Simeon State Park where the estate, and its considerable collection of art and antiques, is open for public tours. Despite its location far from any urban center, the site attracts "millions of travelers each year".

Excerpt from the book, "2. Left on this road (private) about 6 m. to the William Randolph Hearst "Castle" (no admission) on the summit of La Cuesta Encantada (Sp., the enchanted hill), resembling as closely as possible a castle dominating a fortified hilltop village (although the big house, La Casa Grande, as also been compared to a Spanish mission and the four guest houses to French chateau). The estate has its own flying field, tennis courts, and swimming pool. The zoo is stocked with whole heard of bison, giraffes, kangaroos and with other more exotic beasts; the house with paintings, statuary, and other treasures of antiquity. Entire shiploads of case ruins from abroad have been delved here and resembles. The guests at the estate, sometimes brought from Los Angeles in the owner's private plane, are said to be bound by four rules: they are obligated to come to the great hall of La Casa Grande every evening and to attend the nightly moving picture performance in the private theater, and they are forbidden to drink liquor n the guest's suites or to mention the word "death" in the presence of their host."
