"MARIPOSIIE WAS FIRST DESCRIBED AS A MINERAL IN 1868. THE FIRST SPECIMENS WERE COLLECTED FROM THE PINE TREE AND JOSEPHINE MINES OF MARIPOSA COUNTY - THUS THE NAME. MARIPOSIIE , THE BRIGHT GREEN MUSCOVITE MINERAL WAS FORMED AS A RESULT OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS BETWEEN WATERS AND THEIR SURROUNDING ROCKS. EVENTUALLY THE SUPER HEATED SOLUTIONS PERCOLATED UPWARD AND COOLED, OTHER MINERALS, SUCH AS GOLD, SOLIDIFIED WITHIN THE CRACKS OF THE QUARTZ. MARIPOSITE IS A VERY DISTINCTIVE MINERAL THAT TYPIFIES THE CALIFORNIA A MOTHER LODE. THE BRIGHT GREEN COLOR IS CAUSED BY THE PRESENCE OF THE CHEMICAL ELEMENT CHROMIUM IN THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE. THIS ROCK IS A HIGH GRADE ORE SPECIMEN MINED FROM THE 1050 BENCH OF THE HARVARD PIT IN JAMESTOWN MINE IN AUGUST, 1992. IT CAME FROM A ZONE CALLED THE "SLATE VEIN" TIME EARLY UNDERGROUND MINERS."
