The San Francisco Guide says:
The CARNEGIE INSTITUTE LABORATORY, was organized in 1921 for the purpose of studying the production, distribution, and consumption of food. The Carnegie Corporation endowed the laboratory in 1932.
Today this institute deals in two main studies, plant biology and global ecology. In 1940, I don’t think ecology was a common term in 1940 and plant biology was the main focus, as evidenced from the labeling in the classic building. A newer, modern architecture building is located behind and labeled Dept of Global Ecology.
